STATEMENT FROM ALDERWOMAN JULIA RAMIREZ ON NEW SPEED CAMERA AT 3624 S. WESTERN AVE

As part of the city-wide Children’s Safety Zone Program the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) has informed my office that a new Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) camera has now been installed at 3624 S. Western Ave, between W. 37th St and W. 36th St. The speed camera will enforce the Park Safety Zone, near McKinley Park. Per state law, speed enforcement cameras need to be within 1/8th mile of a school or park. Please be advised the speed limit here is 30 miles per hour.

A 30-day warning period is now underway. The camera will begin issuing tickets starting August 15 using photo-enforcement, from 6AM -11PM, all days, on this portion of S. Western Ave for northbound and southbound traffic.

Once enforcement starts, owners of vehicles caught speeding will be subject to the following penalties: $35 if the recorded speed is 6 or more miles over the applicable speed limit, but less than 11 miles over such limit; or $100 if the recorded speed is 11 or more miles per hour over the applicable speed limit.

More information can be found in this CDOT document ‘Chicago Children’s Safety Zone Automated Speed Enforcement Program.’
