Know your rights

You are guaranteed rights under the United States Constitution, no matter your immigration status. Visit the ACLU Immigrations’ Rights Website to learn more about different scenarios. Some of the most common are…

What if ICE asks about my immigration status?

  • Stay calm, remain silent, and do not tell them your status, as what you say can be used against you.

  • Do not lie about your status or provide false information. It is best to stay silent

  • You can say no if a Federal Agent asks to search your person.

  • If you are over 18, always carry your papers with you.

What if ICE knocks on my door?

  • Stay calm, keep the door closed. Speak to them through the door for your safety

  • Ask if they have a warrant signed by a judge and to show it at the window. It must be signed by a “U.S. Magistrate Judge.” If all the information is correct, everyone must remain silent.

What should I do when ICE stops me in my car?

  • Stay calm; the driver and passengers must remain silent, park the car, turn off the engine, and put their hands where officers can see them.

  • Ask if you can freely leave. If the officer says yes, do so calmly.

  • You may ask the agent about the cause for pulling you to the side of the road, and they should tell you.

  • Do not lie about your status or provide false information. It is best to stay silent

  • If you are over 18, always carry your papers with you.
